RRGON is a small but growing network of rescue and adoption groups as well as several individuals. Its two main purposes is to promote greyhounds as pets and to help greyhounds in extremely urgent circumstances. RRGON started in 2003 as a response to the growing number of people concerned about greyhound welfare and adoption. As of January 2008, there are about 50 people in the network, and this includes people at participating rescue and adoption programs. RRGON survives solely on a spirit of reciprocity within the network, so all members contribute to and benefit from being part of the network. We survive solely on our own contributions, and although we do not openly solicit donations, we are quite happy to accept them. RRGON is happy to provide information to prospective greyhound owners and to answer any questions or concerns people might have about greyhounds as pets. From participating in newspaper articles, TV and radio programs, public events and more, we work hard against the negative myths and bad press that greyhounds are victims of. Pet-greyhound owners are most welcome to contact us for advice and suggestions in terms of greyhound care and training, as well as behavioural problems. In regard to helping greyhounds in urgent situations, we respond to information we receive about greyhounds found wandering or collapsed and try to find suitable, responsible, experienced rescues to take them in. We also help other rescue programs who might have taken in a stray greyhound that needs more care than they feel they can provide. We are proud to say that we move heaven and earth at times to get a dog to safety, and many times that has meant moving a dog from one end of Ireland to the other in one afternoon through a chain of volunteer drivers. After a rescued greyhound has had suitable time here to recover and receive medical attention, including neutering (thanks to Dogs Trust), we generally try to place them at reputable rescues in the UK, and most of the time also organise their transport from here in Ireland to their end destination in the UK. In 2007 we helped close to 100 greyhounds and other sighthounds, about half of which were tattooed greyhounds. Most of these dogs were placed with UK rescues, though many of them were very quickly homed. For now, greyhound adoption must rely at least partly on sending greyhounds to responsible programs in the UK, but potential responsible homes in Ireland must not be overlooked either. If you are interested in helping out and also being helped, bear in mind you must be willing at times to help with transport or provide temporary shelter for a greyhound in distress. We also try to help out by providing bedding and other supplies when a large amount of supplies are donated. Feel free to email us with any questions or concerns you have becoming part of the network: rescuedgreyhounds@eircom.net
